Instrumental Music Program
About the Band Programs
Beginner Band is for any student interested in learning to play an instrument for the first time. Students in beginner band meet in small lesson groups throughout the school year before coming together to rehearse as an ensemble. The focus for students in beginner band is getting to know their instrument and to hone their music reading skills.
5th Grade Band is available to any student who started an instrument in fourth grade, or who has moved up from Beginner Band. This group meets during the school day on D days for 45 minutes. Students in this ensemble are working on advancing instrumental skills through repertoire that challenges them with rhythmic and harmonic elements appropriate to the level of the ensemble.
6th Grade Band meets during the school day on F days for 45 minutes. Students in this group work on advancing their skills through posture and breathing exercises, listening activities and the addition of more challenging literature. These students are focusing on skills that will help them be more successful musicians at the middle school level.
Jazz Band is an auditioned group that meets once a week outside of the school day. Students in this ensemble are selected based on their pitch accuracy, tone, aural skills and music reading abilities. These students work on music considered above the level of an average elementary school instrumental group and participate in several performances beyond the Winter and Spring concerts.
While there is no fee to join band, all selected members need to purchase one of the maroon Oxford Music polo shirts to wear with their khaki pants as part of our ensemble uniform. Additionally, students will need to secure an instrument or work with Mr. Maule to rent one for the school year.
