General Music at Hopewell
5th Grade General Music
Students in 5th grade receive general music every three days for half of the school year. In fifth grade, students are focusing on more advanced rhythms, performance responsibilities, musical theater, world music, music notation, sight singing and solfege. Students learn and grow through a combination of Kodaly and Orff pedagogues. Folk dancing, playing the handbells, creating music on the Orff instruments, discovering the mystery song, using the whiteboards, and playing a variety of musical games help keep all students engaged in the music classroom. The overall goal of the general music classroom is to reach each child and help to bring out their most musical selves. 6th Grade General Music Students in the 6th grade also receive music classes every three days for half of the school year. In 6th grade, students are working on reading and writing music, performance responsibilities and world music. All 6th grade students learn the rudimentary skills needed to play the snare drum and bass drum. They use those skills and previous knowledge of rhythmic elements to compose music for the instruments and perform the music for their peers. Students in this grade also study musical styles from sub-saharan Africa, the Torres Strait Islands and a sampling of other cultures. 6th graders use instruments, singing, games and dance to help further their understanding of musical concepts. |
